At the Afro-Caribbean Food Bank, we recognize that seniors within immigrant and newcomer communities face unique and often overwhelming challenges. Many have left behind their families, friends, and lifelong support systems when moving to Canada, while some carry the painful memories of war, loss, and displacement. Language barriers, cultural adjustment, and limited mobility often leave them isolated and struggling with stress, depression, and loneliness. The COVID-19 pandemic only deepened these struggles, making the need for consistent and compassionate support even more urgent.

Our Response

The Senior Services Program is dedicated to creating a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment where Afro-Caribbean and other immigrant seniors can thrive. Our goal is to restore dignity, provide connection, and foster cultural belonging for elders who have given so much to their communities.

Program Services

🔹 Cultural & Social Activities: Opportunities to share traditions, play cultural games, practice rituals, and connect over coffee or meals.
🔹 Community Engagement: Seniors teach younger generations about heritage, cultural practices, and values, keeping traditions alive.
🔹 Transportation Support: Volunteer drivers and accessible transit guidance to reduce mobility challenges and isolation.
🔹 Health & Wellness: Exercise programs, nutrition education, mental health resources, and home visits to provide reassurance and care.
🔹 Settlement & Integration Support: Information sessions on government services, healthcare, and community resources tailored to seniors’ needs.
