Women and Youth Employment Program

At the Afro-Caribbean Food Bank, we understand that many women and youth in our community face significant barriers to finding meaningful employment. While moving to Canada often offers safety and opportunity compared to their countries of origin, the reality is that many still struggle with poverty, underemployment, and limited access to resources.

Language barriers, lack of credential recognition, cultural differences in workplace practices, and limited knowledge of Canada’s labour market often prevent newcomers and marginalized groups from securing jobs that reflect their skills and experience. Many find themselves working multiple low-paying jobs yet remain unable to meet the cost of living. This reality creates stress, limits opportunities, and perpetuates cycles of poverty.

Our Response

The Women and Youth Employment Program is designed to equip participants with the tools, training, and support they need to enter and thrive in the Canadian workforce. By leveraging lived experiences within our community, we provide culturally responsive, practical, and accessible services to reduce employment barriers and open pathways to success.

Program Highlights

🔹 Employment Support: Resume writing, interview preparation, and one-on-one coaching tailored to Canadian workplace expectations.
🔹 Skills Training: Short- and long-term training opportunities that build job readiness and practical skills.
🔹 Mentorship: Guidance from community members, including internationally trained professionals and Canadian volunteers who understand the challenges newcomers face.
🔹 Employer Connections: Partnerships with local businesses and organizations to connect participants to job placements and long-term opportunities.
🔹 Accessibility Services: Interpretation, translation, transportation assistance, and support navigating public transit to ensure equitable access to work.

Why It Matters

This program is not just about employment—it’s about dignity, inclusion, and empowerment. By supporting women and youth in overcoming systemic barriers, we help build stronger families, more resilient communities, and a labour force that truly reflects Canada’s diversity, skills, and experience.

Together, we can create opportunities for women and youth to thrive, breaking the cycle of poverty and building pathways to brighter futures.
