Youth Training & Employment Program

Many young people from Afro-Caribbean, Indigenous, and newcomer communities face unique challenges as they settle into life in Canada. For some, the journey to Edmonton began with displacement, poverty, or interrupted education. These experiences often create feelings of instability, cultural disconnection, and stress, which can affect both their learning and their overall well-being.

Education is a critical factor in building a brighter future, but newcomer and marginalized youth often encounter barriers such as:

  • Interrupted or limited schooling prior to arriving in Canada

  • Language barriers within families and schools

  • Limited access to academic support or role models

  • Financial stress that forces youth into low-paying jobs

  • Intergenerational challenges, as youth adapt more quickly than parents to Canadian culture and norms

These struggles can leave many young people vulnerable to dropping out of school, working in precarious jobs, or experiencing isolation. At the same time, parents also face difficulties supporting their children due to cultural differences, limited English proficiency, and the daily pressures of making ends meet.

Our Response

Through the Youth Training & Employment Program, the Afro-Caribbean Food Bank is committed to empowering youth with the skills, resources, and opportunities they need to thrive. This initiative builds on our mission of nourishing both body and spirit, by not only addressing food insecurity but also creating pathways to sustainable livelihoods.

Program Goals

🔹 Skill Development: Offer training in job readiness, resume writing, interview preparation, and workplace skills.
🔹 Employment Opportunities: Partner with local businesses and organizations to connect youth to internships, part-time, and entry-level jobs.
🔹 Mentorship & Guidance: Pair youth with mentors who provide cultural, academic, and career guidance.
🔹 Educational Support: Provide workshops and resources to help students succeed academically and navigate the Canadian school system.
🔹 Community Belonging: Create safe spaces for youth to connect, share experiences, and build cultural pride.

Why It Matters

By addressing the barriers faced by Afro-Caribbean, Indigenous, and newcomer youth, this program promotes upward mobility, reduces vulnerability to poverty and crime, and strengthens community resilience. It gives young people the tools to make informed decisions, achieve economic independence, and carry forward the rich traditions of their cultures while thriving in Canadian society.

Together, we can invest in the next generation of leaders and ensure they have the support they need to succeed.
